Sheriff Brian Chism embodies what it means to serve with both heart and experience. A lifelong resident of Brunswick County, Sheriff Chism has spent his entire law enforcement career within the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. From the day he joined the agency in 2004, he committed himself to understanding every corner of the office — every division, every role, and every responsibility that keeps the Sheriff’s Office running and the county safe.
Over the years, Sheriff Chism has served in nearly every capacity possible within the agency: Patrol Deputy, K-9 Handler, Narcotics Investigator, Special Operations Supervisor, and later as a Division Commander overseeing areas such as Criminal Investigations, Animal Protective Services, Communications, and Court and Civil process. This hands-on experience gives him an unmatched understanding of how each part of the Sheriff’s Office works together to protect and serve Brunswick County. He doesn’t just lead from behind a desk — he leads from firsthand knowledge, built through decades of doing the work himself.
Appointed Sheriff in 2023, Brian Chism continues to demonstrate that leadership in law enforcement is about more than a title. It’s about showing up — for the people, the events, and the causes that matter most to the community. Whether it’s attending school safety events, community clean-ups, or local fundraisers, Sheriff Chism is often present on his own time, not because there’s a camera or campaign nearby, but because he genuinely cares about the people he serves. His approachability and willingness to listen have made him a familiar and trusted face across Brunswick County.
Sheriff Chism believes that the best way to build trust between law enforcement and the community is through connection and consistency. He encourages deputies and command staff to be visible and involved, setting the example by being out in the community year-round — not just during election seasons. Under his leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has focused on community partnerships, transparency, and programs that promote understanding and safety, such as the Citizens Academy and numerous public outreach initiatives.
Decades of experience inside the Sheriff’s Office have given Sheriff Chism a rare, full-circle view of public safety — from front-line patrol to top-level leadership. That depth of experience ensures that every decision he makes as Sheriff is informed, practical, and rooted in a true understanding of what it takes to serve Brunswick County with integrity and commitment.
